I think Chernobyl has a certain morbid fascination with people from western Europe, who were not directly affected by it, like people slowing down to rubberneck a car accident. It’s sometimes easy to forget that the event entailed real horror for real people.

Terrible, terrible memories… My uncle was there among the “liquidators” – and he’s been ill since then. Let’s just hope the latest advances in thermonuclear technology will help us get rid of Chernoby’s shadow.
