China is one of the world’s most long-established and sophisticated cultures – we can’t do more than scratch the surface at describing what it has to offer as a travel destination.
The huge area now known as China was not always one nation – although its largely true to say that it was several nations mainly populated by Chinese people. Over many centuries of civilized development alternating with vicious wars, these rival provinces and princedoms slowly became fused into one nation, since the advantages of such a system outweighed the disadvantages. But the famous Chinese curse – “may you live in interesting times” – has resulted in a huge wealth of relics and legacy of China’s turbulent and “interesting” history.
